The Sacramento BMI Difference

The choice of a bariatric program is an extremely important decision, as you will be placing your life, health, and well-being into their hands. We believe that there are many reasons that Dr. Shadle stands out as the best choice for the well-informed patient.

Some of these reasons are as follows:

Dr. Shadle has continuous coverage for his practice exclusively by bariatric surgeons. This means that if you have a surgical issue, we have 24/7/365 coverage by a skilled bariatric surgeon. Other practices rely on non-specialized surgeons ranging from general to breast to trauma surgery to cover for them if they are off for the weekend or out of town. This greatly increases the chances of your problem being misdiagnosed or having an invasive “open” (large abdominal incision) procedure performed should you need emergency surgical care.

• We are located within minutes of most of the Sacramento greater metropolitan area, and have care centers throughout Northern California. Some patients travel great distances to have their operations performed without first considering what may happen in case of a surgical emergency when their surgeon lives many hours away. Dr. Shadle sees patients at two different bariatric care centers to serve you in Sacramento, and Roseville.  In addition, specialized registered dietitians are available in Yuba City, Jackson, Downtown Sacramento, Elk Grove, and the Fairfield/Vacaville area.  We believe that it is extremely important for the patient to have care close to home.

Dr Shadle does not charge any “program fee” to participate in the program. Beware of practices that have a hidden “program fee” (typically up to five thousand dollars), that are charged to patients just prior to authorizing surgery. Many patients have come to us after having the entire preoperative workup performed, thinking that they are only weeks away from surgery, only to be informed that if they want to go to surgery, they have to pay a “program fee” directly to their surgeon in addition to insurance deductibles and other out-of-pocket expenses.

Dr. Shadle is fellowship trained in bariatric surgery, having completed an additional full year of surgical training exclusively for gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, duodenal switch, and adjustable gastric banding, revisional surgery, etc. Dr. Shadle is board certified by American College of Surgeons, and passed his boards on the first attempt. He is also a fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS). Dr. Shadle has also received the distinction of Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) which demonstrates his surgical ability and high ethical standards.

Dr. Shadle was trained by world-leaders in the field of bariatric surgery and are familiar with not only the common courses after surgery, but also the extremely rare cases that arise.

Dr. Shadle carefully follows his complication rates such as postoperative bleeding or leaks, and our complication rates are much lower than the published national averages. Dr Shadle believes that in order for a patient to make an informed decision about surgery, his patients should know his personal complication rates compared to the national norms, AS WELL as the benefits of surgery.

Dr. Shadle prides himself in surgical precision and technique. Dr. Shadle takes the extra time during the operation to hand-sew closed any potential “internal hernia” spaces during gastric bypass surgery. He also spends the time during sleeve gastrectomy to completely over- sew the staple line on the stomach. Whether performing adjustable gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric bypass, he thoroughly dissects out the “hiatus” and if a hiatal hernia is found, this is repaired at the time of the operation. The surgery could be performed more quickly by blindly placing a stitch in the area and calling it a hiatal hernia repair, but Dr Shadle does not have a “factory-line” mentality and is committed to taking the extra time to ensure that the procedure is performed correctly.

•Dr Shadle approaches the treatment of obesity as a chronic medical disease and not just a mechanical problem to be treated only by shrinking the size of the stomach. We have striven to develop our current complete program and team approach to the treatment of obesity which includes not only surgeons, but medical weight-loss experts, endocrinologists, psychologists, and full time dieticians. We expect all patients to be on board for life! We find joy in their successes as well as support them through hardships that may arise through regular visits for the rest of their lives. This means that your care will not only be approached from the “mechanical” perspective of a surgeon, but will also be orchestrated by many others as you are treated from a holistic perspective.  Dr. Shadle does not turn a blind eye to the possibility that a patient may regain weight after bariatric surgery and is dedicated to helping the patient for life, not just performing a surgery.

Our practice has been built on the values of compassion, integrity, and excellence. We believe surgeons should have excellent hands and excellent hearts.
